My piece explores how artists can manipulate colour to evoke personal emotions in their own work that represent meaningful parts of their life. The large tonal drawing I created portrays myself, gazing up at the beautiful memories I have with the people in my life.

Art and literature are found in all cultures and are among the oldest forms of storytelling. My work, ISO, uses words and drawings together to express the meanings of the work. The video installation features 120 individual drawings, all involving text. The phrases and situations of the people are based on my personal experiences and events at the time of drawing, such as Coronavirus or an auction. Given most drawings were completed when listening to music, the backing track Daydreaming by Radiohead provides another layer to the personal context and feeling of the work.

I am detached from something I could never find. ‘The Unknown Layers’ is not a rejection of a divine guidance but rather a reflection of my constant search to find it. But what is it? My deep personal alienation from spirituality creates feelings of disconnect from my surroundings. This detached cultural relationship revealed itself when visiting St Stephen’s Cathedral, with my peers. Imagery and audio of distorted religious conventions such as the church, church-bells, and Christian song express to the audience my disjointed perspective and communicate my introspective mood. Furthermore, the cultural disassociation is developed through metaphorical shots of the sky, my flailing hands and the discordant audio.

The basis of a one’s personal individuality is established from the culture from which they originated. The expectations and routines which a person are subject to daily become an integral part of their identity. Never before has the exposure to varying cultures, beliefs, and ways of life been as accessible as it is now. دائري (dayiri) is an auditory and visual reflection on culture and religion. By incorporating religious references, such as the call to prayer audio, the Arabian dress, and the projection of the Quran (the Arabic religious text), the film challenges preconceptions of Islam.
